Activities and games that enhance attention and concentration in children

The brain is amenable to learning throughout a person’s life, so regardless of age, every person can do something to improve their ability to concentrate.

For a child, the best way to practice concentration is through play since through it, the senses are activated and the more stimuli, the greater the alertness of the brain and the retention of information.

Below are several ideas for games and fun activities to boost concentration:

  • Tell stories, read fairy tales, and ask the child to do the same for you. Discuss the plot and characters of the story.
  • Play role stories, create stories, and edit and change stories.
  • Listen to songs, learn the lyrics, and sing them.
  • Encourage the child to engage in musical motor activities or learn a musical instrument.
  • Play memory games such as memory card games or the “I’m going on a trip and in my suitcase, I’ll put…” game, where each player adds a new item while repeating all the previous ones.
  • Play various board games, e.g., uno and monopoly.
  • Do puzzles.
  • Encourage the child to engage in art and construction activities.
  • Follow the instructions of a recipe to make a food or dessert that the child likes.

In general, anything that requires the child to be fully alert and focused on performing an activity has a reinforcing effect on attention, concentration, and memory.
